Did you see this blanket in Mollie Makes (Issue 3 Page 45)? The magazine describes it as the ultimate crochet blanket. It is part of an article about Lisa Stickley's home which contains many family heirlooms.
Mum and I were very excited when we saw it because my Mum made me this blanket when I was little. It is in a book that Mum bought over 41 years ago, a book that until a month ago was in my possession as I was using it (along with You Tube) to teach myself to crochet. I gave it back to Mum recently and hence we have been looking at it not too long ago. When we saw the blanket in Mollie Makes we immediately retrieved the book to compare and it is indeed the same blanket!
The book it was in is Patons Book No. 167 'First Steps in Crochet' with this cover:
See the price - 20p!! I expect that was quite a lot of money for Mum in the late 1960's.
But look what is on the back cover.
Oooh, lovely crochet squares. The granny squares themselves are very easy to make and as they are each a single colour there are far fewer ends to sew in than on other types of granny square. I know because last night I had to try and make one using the pattern in the book.
I used a 4mm crochet hook and not the 5mm suggested in the pattern (as I don't have one) and the square came out at about 2.75" square rather than the 3" stated in the book. I will try to get a 5mm hook.
So, do you want the pattern? Do you???
Here you are :)
Happy hooking!
